CRUISES: Paddlers proceed at a leisurely pace (often with a stop for lunch) down scenic waterways.

CLINICS AND TRAINING: Formal or informal skill and technique development. 

INSTRUCTION: As used here, mainly ACA instructor certification programs. Usually ACA membership is required.

SYMPOSIUMS: Programs including demonstrations, lectures, instruction, films, short clinics, and paddling with different boats and equipment. "River and canoe days" also normally include paddling to experience different equipment.

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Boating Division in cooperation with ConnYak, the City of New Haven Department of Parks and Recreation, and the US Coast Guard will present an afternoon of safe paddling demonstrations and information sessions at the Conte/West Hills Magnet School, 511 Chapel Street, New Haven. The event is free of charge and will feature in-pool demonstrations and other topics including self-rescue, choosing the right craft and communications. Professionals from the US Coast Guard, certified canoe and kayak instructors from the City of New Haven, and a variety of representatives from the paddling industry and the DEP Boating Division will be on hand to answer any questions. April 17-22 Teen Wilderness Leadership Wilderness Leadership Program for Teens 14-16
Learn how to lead groups, and keep them safe in the wilderness. Completion of the seven day course will give participants certification in WILD and WFA (Wilderness First Aid with CPR).
Topics will include safe leadership practices, basic rescuer safety, skills in patient assessment and care in a wilderness setting. Learn backcountry navigation, weather forecasting, campcraft, shelter building, coping with environmental emergencies such as hypothermia and heat injuries and much more.
The course, meals and lodging will be at Hulbert Outdoor Center on Lake Morey in Fairlee, Vermont. Introduction to Paddling Certifications and Basic River Canoeing Certification
Hulbert Outdoor Center will sponsor an American Canoe Association Certificate program to become an ACA Tandem Canoe Instructor. Courses will be taught by ACA Instructor Trainers, Laurie Gullion, Bruce Lindwall or Mark Moore. Courses cover Introduction to Paddling (flatwater) and Basic River Canoeing (Class 1 whitewater) certifications. Canoes, PFDs, paddles and safety equipment is provided. Candidates must demonstrate basic boat control skills, teaching ability, safety awareness, and technical knowledge to obtain certifications.
